Have you ever thought about the power of a question? As educators, we ask and answer literally thousands of questions every day. In AVID, we use the WICOR checkpoints to ensure we take time to do key components of learning every day, and part of WICOR is Inquiry--asking and answering pointed questions.
This week, take a moment to really plan questions into your lesson plan, whether they are Essential Questions, Guiding Questions, or Comprehensions Questions, in a more deliberate way.The Socratic Method is teaching through questioning, of course, but we must remember that our questioning method must be strategic, not that of an interrogator. Moreover, allow "wait time" once a question has been raised. It takes time for students to process what has been asked of them. You'll be surprised at who may want to answer when given thirty seconds longer to think.
Grant Wiggins proposed, and I am sure Mary Katherine Swanson (founding AVID teacher) would agree, that it is necessary to "slow down the teaching to speed up the learning."
Being AVID takes courage, but we are equal to the task!
Enjoy the Lee County Schools videos about the AVID movement here. We may be small, but we are mighty! We are making a difference, one day--one question--at a time.
